The BBC has announced, beginning in 2010, Matt Smith will replace David Tennant as the next Doctor on their cult time-travel series Doctor Who. In October, Tennant announced his intention to leave the show sparking the latest search for a new Time Lord. Tennant will appear in 4 hour long series this year before finally regenerating into Smith.
Jay Hunt, Controller, BBC ONE said "Matt Smith will be a mesmerising eleventh Time Lord, true to the spirit of the show. He is a worthy successor to David Tennant who has been utterly remarkable in the role and promises to continue to be in next year's four special episodes."
Billie Piper, who plays the Doctor's companion, seems to be Smith's strongest link to the show. His first television role came in The Ruby in the Smoke (2006) where he played Jim Taylor, assistant to Billie Piper's lead character Sally Lockhart. In 2007, he reclaimed the role in the follow-up The Shadow in the North and also appear in one episode of Piper's series Secret Diary of a Call Girl. However, he may be best know for his role as Danny Foster in Party Animals (2007).
